Ubuntu - A alternative to Windows. Thinking Loud!

IT in India (and thus IT for India) was always a concern for me. After about 7 years, so it was exciting to come back to work in that area. Yes, I do believe that time to work and improve productivity of companies outside my homeland come to an end at least for now. In this new role, one thing which striked me was the extent of pirated softwares in Indian homes and small offices. That set me thinking if there is any alternative. Many says TINA (There Is No Alternative). Microsoft softwares is too expensive and my next door computer vendor is happy to install pirated software and advise me to forget it then.

Is there any real alternative? Yes, is the resounding answer.
Linux is the open source implementation similar to rock solid Unix operating system. Over many years, Linus's effort to make a free alternative is reaching the maturity in terms of ease to use for the common man. One of linux implementation is Ubuntu (supported by Canonical) and the latest version is 10.10 (released in 2010, 10th Month).

Over a month I am using Ubuntu and very happy with it and I hope more people will switch over to Ubuntu over time or pay for (as against pray for not to get caught) their softwares to Microsoft. Any one serious to switching over to Ubuntu, I am ready to help as well :). Happy spread of IT in India for India. I believe that rural india yet to completely enjoy the advantages of technology.

Do you need to be called ? Jim Elliott

He is my favorite and hero. Here is some quotes from "Jim Elliot"

"He is no fool who gives up what he can’t keep to gain what he cannot lose. "

"Our young men are going into the professional fields because they don't 'feel called' to the mission field. We don't need a call; we need a kick in the pants. We must begin thinking in terms of 'going out,' and stop our weeping because 'they won't come in.' Who wants to step into an igloo? The tombs themselves are not colder than the churches. May God send us forth."

Jim Elliot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Elliot) was a bright young man and he decided to head to Equador to share about Jesus and help the head hunters there. Movie/Documentary on their stories can be watched on "Through the gates of Splendor" and "End of spear". If you like to watch them and in Manali, please contact me.

The Cloth

My life is but a weaving between my God and me,
I do not choose the colors, He worketh steadily.
Oftimes He weaveth sorrow, and I in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper, and I the underside.

Not till the loom is silent, and shuttles cease to fly,
Will God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful in the skillful Weaver's hand
As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He has planned.
